The concluding concert of Sibafest features the world premiere of the Cello Concerto of Sauli Zinovjev, an alumnus of the Sibelius Academy. Born in 1988, Zinovjev is one of the rising stars of the young generation of Finnish composers. His works have been performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Kymi Sinfonietta and also by Sinfonia Lahti, the Oulu Sinfonia, Ensemble Recherche in Germany and the Esbjerg Ensemble in Denmark.

The Paulo Foundation, the headline sponsor of the International Paulo Cello Competition, commissioned this work as a gift for the centenary of Finland’s independence. The soloist, Sirja Nironen, was selected from among cello students at the Sibelius Academy by audition in spring 2017.

The programme also includes the Second Symphony of Leevi Madetoja, written in memory of his brother Yrjö who fell in the Civil War, and the well-known fiery music of Serge Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.
